When life feels overwhelming, many people assume they need a big solution—major life changes, complicated coping strategies, or perfectly balanced routines. In reality, supporting our mental health often starts with something much simpler: returning to the basics.
In therapy, this is often referred to as behavioral activation or in other words, intentionally engaging in small, supportive behaviors that help regulate mood, energy, and motivation. When our nervous system is overwhelmed, our brains benefit from predictable rhythms and basic physical care.
Think of it as building the foundation for emotional wellbeing.
A Simple Daily Self-Care Check-In
Before assuming something is deeply wrong, it can be helpful to pause and ask yourself a few basic questions:
Sleep
Did I get around 7–9 hours of sleep last night?
Hydration
Have I had enough water today? (64-89oz)
Nutrition
Have I eaten three regular meals that provide nourishment? Have I had a snack?
Movement
Have I moved my body in some way today even a short walk or stretch?
Sunlight & Fresh Air
Have I stepped outside or had natural light exposure?
Connection
Have I spoken with or connected with another person today?
Rest & Regulation
Have I taken even a few moments to slow down, breathe, or pause?
Hygiene
Have I washed my face? Taken a shower/bath? Brushed my teeth?
Why These Basics Matter
These behaviors may seem small, but they directly influence how the brain regulates mood, stress, and emotional resilience. Sleep supports emotional processing. Hydration and nutrition stabilize energy. Movement and sunlight help regulate circadian rhythms and neurotransmitters involved in mood.
When these foundations are missing, it becomes much harder for our minds to feel balanced.
Start Small
Self-care does not have to be elaborate. Sometimes the most powerful step is simply asking: “What basic need might my body or mind have right now?”
